OC Public Libraries Presents Summer Reading Challenge 2025

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (June 10, 2025) – This summer, OC Public Libraries invites residents of all ages to embark on a literary adventure with its Summer Reading Challenge, Level Up!, a season filled with engaging activities designed to inspire a love of reading. From June 16th to August 3rd, participants can explore in-branch programming, grab & go craft kits, author events, and curated reading lists. Weekly scavenger hunts and activities promise fresh opportunities for fun, encouraging patrons to return each week for something new to discover. Signing up is simple! Visit ocpl.beanstack.org or download the free Beanstack app to create an account and register all the readers in your family. Completing fun activities will earn participants virtual badges, making the challenge interactive and rewarding. OC Public Libraries is dedicated to fostering literacy, creativity, and community engagement. Join us this summer and experience the joy of reading in a dynamic, supportive environment.

 

 

Kick-Off Event with Author Benson Shum 

 

WHO:  

Benson Shum is an award-winning children's book author and illustrator. His books, Anzu the Great Listener and Anzu the Great Kaiju were selected as Kid's Indie Next List Recommend by the American Booksellers Association (ABA) and awarded for Outstanding Achievement in Social Emotional Literature (SEL) by the Children's Literature Council of Southern California (CLCSC). Benson is also an Animator at the Walt Disney Animation Studios.

(May 30, 2025) –OC Public Libraries is excited to announce the return of Lunch at the Library for summer 2025, providing free meals to children and teens 18 and under at select branch locations. This initiative supports learning, health, and wellness by offering nutritious meals alongside engaging reading programs, craft activities, and character-themed events. No registration is required, and meals are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring that young readers can enjoy a summer filled with books, creativity, and community support.

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (May 30, 2025) – OC Public Libraries is proud to present a children’s author series featuring award winning and bestselling children’s book authors. This program series runs throughout the summer and celebrates literacy while showcasing multicultural books and the authors who write them. Attending an author event is a magical experience which allows readers to connect with the authors whose words have empowered, inspired, and entertained them.  Representation is crucial in fostering a sense of belonging and understanding, and through these diverse voices, children can see themselves reflected in the stories they read. By bringing this program series to life, OC Public Libraries hopes to spark a love of reading in our community and connect children and families to literature in a meaningful way.

Lynn Brunelle– Tuesday, June 3 at 11am at the Garden Grove Chapman Library

Lynn Brunelle is a four-time Emmy Award-winning writer best known for her work on Bill Nye the Science Guy, with over 30 years of experience creating engaging content for children. She has authored more than 50 books, including Turn This Book into a Beehive and Pop Bottle Science, making science fun and accessible for young readers. A passionate advocate for STEM education, Lynn has developed projects for National Geographic, Scholastic, and PBS, and has spoken at the UN about empowering girls in science.

Jennifer Chen – Wednesday, July 9 at 1pm at the Garden Grove Chapman Library

Jennifer Chen is an award-winning freelance journalist who has written for Today, New York Times, Oprah Daily, and Real Simple. She has been interviewed on NPR’s Weekend Edition about the rise in anti-Asian hate and discussed pregnancy loss for a Glamour PSA video with actress Melissa Rauch. She was named a 2023–2024 Huntington Library Fellow to research the history of Chinatowns in California for an upcoming historical fiction novel. In addition, she was chosen as a 2024 Lando Grant finalist by the DeGroot Foundation. She wrote a short story featured in the young adult anthology, First-Year Orientation. Her debut young adult novel, Artifacts of an Ex, is out now. Her second YA book, Hangry Hearts, publishes in March 2025. She is a proud volunteer for WriteGirl, a creative writing and mentoring organization, and a loving foster parent for kittens at Best Friends Los Angeles.

Emma Steinkellner is an illustrator, writer, and cartoonist based in Los Angeles, California. She is the author and illustrator of The Okay Witch graphic novel series, which follows a young girl discovering her magical heritage. A graduate of Stanford University, Emma has also illustrated the Eisner-nominated comic Quince and collaborated on various webcomic projects.

Lucky Diaz is a bilingual, multi-Latin Grammy Award-winning, Grammy-nominated and six-time Emmy-nominated musician, children's television personality, and author. His work has been praised by NPR, Billboard, People, and the New York Times. He is a Parent's Choice Gold Award and NAPPA Award winner. In 2020, his album Buenos Diaz was named an official selection of notable works for children by the American Library Association. Lucky's debut picture book, Paletero Man, has been celebrated with starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and ALA Booklist.

Heidi Moreno is a Mexican-American author-illustrator based in Los Angeles, known for her whimsical and textured artwork created with watercolors, gouache, and colored pencils. Congratulations employee of the month Helen!

Helen is a fantastic employee who goes the extra mile with every patron interaction. She’s always willing to take on new duties, learn new things, and is a great asset to the Laguna Hills Technology team and the Laguna Hills community at large. In addition to her branch work Helen conducts weekly storytimes and has a loyal following of both kids and parents. She also serves as the co-chair of OCPL’s Discover and Go committee. She’s one of the system’s biggest Discover and Go champions and loves to share with patrons about the program and its possibility to explore beyond the library’s walls. Helen is willing to jump in and help whenever necessary and always does it with a smile and a positive attitude. She is a true example of what it means to step up and take on leadership roles during unforeseen circumstances and to support colleagues and the library’s systemwide efforts. OC Public Libraries Presents Comic Orange 2025

Tustin, Calif. (May 3, 2025) – OC Public Libraries is pleased to present Comic Orange 2025. This year’s annual event is on Saturday May 10th from 11:00am-3:00pm at the Tustin Library. Comic Orange promotes literacy in our community by highlighting our graphic novel collections, celebrating comics, and engaging the community by offering an annual family-friendly event. This year will feature an author talk with Jarret J. Krosoczka, creator of the Lunch Lady graphic novels, at 11:00am and a cookbook demo with Jarrett Melendez, author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Cookbook, at 12:00pm. In addition, there will be an artist alley, fan groups, storytime, podcast panel, and a special limited edition library card for all guests. No registration is required.

This month-long celebration honors the rich cultural heritage, contributions, and stories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. We invite the community to join us for a series of engaging events, including author talks, cooking classes, and a music appreciation series.

Author Events

 

WHO:  

Sarah Ahn is America’s Test Kitchen’s social media manager and the creator of the Ahnest Kitchen website. She records her experiences on Instagram and TikTok of living with her Korean immigrant parents, chronicling her mother’s cooking, grocery shopping trips, and more. Many of Sarah’s posts have gone viral with 10+ million views and they have sold grocery stores out of product. She has been featured on NBC News, ABC News, Yahoo News, and Good Morning America.

 

Nam Soon Ahn, her mother, is a former restaurateur whose culinary wisdom and recipes form the foundation of this book. Together, they honor their heritage with love, flavor, and authenticity.
