How big is the landfill?
The landfill property boundary encompasses 565 acres, of which 453 are used for landfilling.
What are the hours of operation?
The Olinda Landfill is open from 6:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays (i.e., six days per week).
What type of waste is received at the landfill?
The Olinda Landfill is an municipal solid waste landfill that accepts refuse from central Orange County cities and communities. Hazardous materials are not accepted at the landfill.
How much waste is brought to the landfill every day?
The landfill is currently permitted to accept up to 8,000 tons of solid waste per day. Currently approximately 5,000 tons per day are brought to the landfill.
What is the smoke that I see coming from the new power plant?
What you see is the water vapor that results from the power plant operation. It is harmless, and is most visible in the morning.
When will the landfill stop accepting waste?
The landfill will stop accepting waste when it reaches its full capacity, which is anticipated to occur by 2030. However, the remaining active life of the landfill will be evaluated annually.
What construction will be visible during the next five years?
The landfill’s visible front slope will be graded with soil to thicken its cover and to plant trees. The trees will improve landfill’s appearance. Construction is expected to start in summer 2014 and be completed by spring 2015.
What will be the future use of the landfill?
Upon reaching full capacity, additional soil will be placed on top of the landfill. It will be graded and seeded to promote native vegetation growth. The landfill will remain as open space and its appearance will blend with its natural surroundings.
