Environmental Resources Section - publishes a Hydrologic Data Report containing data dating back as far as the late 1800s. New data is added each year from reporting (via radio telemetry) rain gages, recording non-reporting rain gages, and non-recording cooperative observer (maintained by volunteers) rain gages, and reporting water level stations.
These hydrologic data, coupled with satellite and radar tracking of storms, are used for flood detection, allowing maintenance crews to be assigned to potential problem areas. The result is a better allocation of resources and enhanced public safety. The data are also used for a variety of other municipal purposes by the private sector.
