Project Information: The Trabuco Creek Channel (L02), is located in the City of San Juan Capistrano. Trabuco Creek Channel was built in 1962 as a soft-bottom trapezoidal channel with 4-inch thick unreinforced concrete lined walls (2:1 side slopes), and is a tributary to San Juan Creek Channel (L01). Extensive channel wall damage was sustained in 1998 due to major storms when approximately 325 feet of the channel embankment was partially washed out and temporarily flooded San Juan Capistrano’s City Hall, which is adjacent to the channel. In December 2010 additional channel wall and embankment damage was sustained due to storm flows.
Despite previous repairs, the channel remains vulnerable to levee failure. In response, OC Public Works developed an eight phase plan to be accomplished in seven years. Phase 7 proposes to install approximately 4,800 linear feet of a steel sheet pile wall system behind the unreinforced channel lining in order to reinforce the existing levee. A short flood wall will also be constructed on top of the steel sheet piles to meet FEMA freeboard requirements toward the eventual removal of nearby residents from the 100-year Flood Plain.
