Influenza season is almost here.  Providers are encouraged to begin vaccination efforts as soon as vaccine is available.

Orange County reports its first influenza-related death this season in a person less than 65 years of age. Flu activity is widespread in California and continues to be elevated in Orange County.

Influenza is rapidly increasing in Orange County and the U.S. Several severe influenza cases have been reported in Orange County. If not already, now is the time to get vaccinated!

Influenza B activity is increasing in Orange County. The first two reports of severe influenza were received, one in a child and one in an adult. It is not too late to get the flu vaccine this season.

The percent of outpatient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) has tripled in the last week (currently at 6.4%) and several outbreaks of influenza and ILI have been reported in congregate settings, such as long term care facilities (LTCF) and schools.

Orange County has seen a substantial increase in influenza reports over the previous three weeks. Health care professionals should encourage all patients 6 months and older who have not yet received an influenza vaccine this season to be vaccinated against influenza.

Influenza activity is currently increasing and is expected to increase further in the coming weeks. CDC reminds clinicians of the benefits of influenza antiviral medications (oseltamivir [Tamiflu®] and zanamivir [Relenza®]) as an adjunct to vaccination in light of circulating H3N2 strains that are antigenically different (drifted) from the vaccine virus strain.
